Saturday 23rd

Saturday 23rd

One exam done, four to go. And this one was the one I was dreading most as well, as it was my history and ethics exam. It was the odd-one-out of my exams, as the others are all in psychology, and it was the one that was the hardest to study. The ethics bit especially – writing ethics essays is hard!

But actually, the whole thing wasn’t as bad as I’d expected. The essay questions were quite nice, and I actually found myself with five possible ones to answer (I had to write four). The ethics once, mercifully, were on very similar topics to two that I had planned yesterday during revision. And whilst I didn’t write a history essay in my favourite area (psychiatry and psychoanalysis), the history questions I did answer were quite nice.

So yeah, one down. And the next one is on Tuesday, so I’ve actually got a few days to switch gears and work on that. Not least because I have a regatta tomorrow, and rehearsals today and tomorrow, so having one part of revision out of the way is relaxing. Yeah, more rehearsals. I’m not sure why I thought doing another play was a good idea, although I’m sure I’ll appreciate it once my exams are all over.

And other than exams and revision, and rowing, and rehearsals…well, this term is actually turning out quite nice. For…other reasons. Which I won’t go into. You know, the whole ‘don’t jinx it’ thing.

Right, another forty minutes to relax, then off to today’s rehearsal.

Thursday 14th May

Thursday 14th

A long day of work today. I spent three and a half hours in Caffe Nero this morning working, then an (unsuccessful) hour in the Whipple attempting to study ethics. I failed, because the book I was looking for wasn’t there, so did a bit more history instead. I’m not really sure why I decided studying history was a good idea, because, as interesting as it is, it is murder to revise.

After that, I did a few more hours in my room over lunch, then did a horrendous erg session (1.40 full pelt, 20 second rest, repeat four times, rest 15 minutes, and do it all again) before dinner and another hour of work. It’s ten o’clock now and I’m absolutely shattered and contemplating falling into bed as soon as possible.

To be honest though, the reason I wasn’t being all that productive today, and I’m so tired now, is more to do with last night. I went to formal not intending to drink, and succeeded throughout the, actually quite nice, meal. I only had half a glass of wine. But then we came back to Peterhouse and I managed to down three gin and tonics in the space of an hour (I think – it could have been slightly longer than that, I’m not sure. It was a bit fuzzy). So I’ve spent most of the day hungover…and with other things on my mind. But I don’t want to jinx anything, so I’ll leave those out.

Anyway, more revision in store for tomorrow, plus an early – 6.40AM at the boat house. So, bed, here I come!

Hello and all that

So, here we go again...

I've started blogs before, but not seen them through. This one is really just for me - my thoughts and complaints and moans and so on. I'm just going to dive straight in with the first entry.

Well, last night went really well. It was the first night of Festen, in King's College Hall, and the play was a success – there was a decent sized audience, and though there were a few slips with the lines, we caught them all. Some of the feedback is brilliant too – Leona’s friend, for example, said:

"Leona, I just wish to tell you that I was completely overwhelmed by the
play and by you actors. It is very rare to be disturbed so deeply and to
enjoy it so much, to feel both ashamed and perfectly thrilled to be taking
pleasure. Words fail me, in a way. Such a brutal, brutal thing. Thank you
for that."

Wicked review or what?! Even if I do only have a very small part.

This morning, on the other hand, has been absolutely mank. I didn’t get to sleep until about half one last night, and then had to be up at 6am for an outing. So not getting off to a good start, because I really, really didn’t want to get out of bed. And then the outing…
Awful. It felt like a huge struggle to do anything. My legs were completely dead, my arms felt ridiculously heavy, and I was just exhausted from the get go. And then trying to put pressure in during the two pieces (we did a lock and a reach, with a 12’ piece at 24/26, then a 6’ piece at 26) was nearly impossible. Not to mention the rushing…that eternal problem. And usually, I stick with S., and if she’s not compressing fully, neither am I. Today, I was too tired to resist being slammed up the slide when the rest of the boat rushed. So when we stopped, D.H. was criticising me, L. and C. for rushing. And ok, I know I wasn’t perfect, but it just felt like we were being victimised a bit, because there’s only so much any of us can do if the rest of the boat can’t/won’t follow.
Still, outing over, so I have the rest of the day to calm down and get some revision done.

18 days until my first exam…
